According to the U.S. Department of Justice, NCS Pearson will pay the federal government $5.6 million dollars to settle allegations that the firm overcharged the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)

Pearson was hired by the TSA to help recruit airport screeners.  The company was audited over 3 years ago and the audit found some interesting expenditures.

  • $526.95 for one phone call from the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Chicago to Iowa City.
  • $1,180 for 20 gallons of Starbucks Coffee — $3.69 a cup — at the Santa Clara Marriott in California.
  • $1,540 to rent 14 extension cords at $5 each per day for three weeks at the Wyndham Peaks Resort and Golden Door Spa in Telluride, Colo.
  • $8,100 for elevator operators at the Marriott Marquis in Manhattan.
  • $5.4 million claimed for nine months’ salary for the chief executive of an “event logistics” firm that received a contract before it was incorporated and went out of business after the contract ended.

The “settlement again demonstrates the Department’s commitment to protecting taxpayer funds from misuse by those doing business with the federal government,” said Gregory G. Katsas, Assistant Attorney General for the Department’s Civil Division.

Fake Bad Scale

A new article was recently published indicating the Fake Bad Scale adopted by the University of Minnesota Press as a part of the MMPI2 scoring package has results in over 50% of women, depending on the cut score used,  in a hospital with documented eating disorders actually failing the scale.

The article is critical of the process by which the scale was actually adopted and concludes, “The FBS does not appear to be sufficiently reliable or valid test for measuring “faking bad” nor should it be used to impute the motivation to malinger in those reaching its variable and imprecise cutting scores.”
